GUIDELINES FOR PARENT/GUARDIANS WHEN VOICING CONCERNS WITH COACHES

  • When stating concerns to coaches, you should be prepared with the facts as you understand them, or can ascertain them. Think through the expectations of the outcomes you expect will result from the meeting.

  • When conversing with a coach or other authority, you should repeat back what you hear the coach say to be sure that important points are understood. Parents should stay calm and friendly when talking with, or listening to, a coach. Consider taking notes.

  • Before the session ends, agree on a plan that is clearly understood by all parties. Check for mutual understanding. Set a time and method of responding, if necessary. Make plans to touch base.

The Athletic Department assumes that all parties have the best interest of the student in mind when concerns are discussed and we make every effort to ensure that the student is not penalized or placed in an awkward position as a result of voicing a complaint.

Moreover, we believe that parents and coaches who share the common aspirations of academic success, self-esteem, and the sense of belonging can work together to solve problems. We believe that adults can teach young people to resolve their own conflicts and that this is part of the complete education that can be gained by participating in an interscholastic program. We pledge to resolve conflicts in mutually satisfactory ways.
