Huron High School
Phase II Site Improvements

August 2005

Dear Huron Families and Staff:

We have had an extremely busy summer at Huron with major electrical upgrades and site improvements nearing completion as we prepare for the start of the 2005 Fall semester.  Thanks again to members of the Huron Design Team who participated in planning for these improvements over the 2004/2005 school year.  We have added a new connector road near the football stadium, additional parking for students and visitors, and reconfigured new drop-off / pickup zones as we eliminate the pedestrian and vehicle conflicts under the arch. Attached is a chart that describes the “on-site” improvements on the Huron Campus.

The City of Ann Arbor is also making a series of corresponding “off site“ improvements including a lighted pedestrian crosswalk with overhead signage at the north Huron Parkway entrance, a new northbound “Michigan Left” and improvements at the entry and exit medians along Huron Parkway.  The northbound “Michigan Left” is to provide an alternative method of accessing westbound Fuller avoiding some of the delay experienced when making a left turn onto Fuller from northbound Huron Parkway..

As with any changes, these improvements will take some getting used to.  We hope you will take the time to review these materials to assist you and your families in updating your arrival and departure patterns.   The Transportation Department bus drivers will also provide additional information on drop-off/pickup zones for the students who ride the bus. See the links below for the new traffic pattern map and additional tips on arrival, departure and parking locations at Huron.

Highlights:

  • Reconfigured North and South Loops provide one way, two lane roads for drop-off and pick-up.  Enter and Exit on Huron Parkway, or Enter and Exit on Fuller. All vehicles (buses, staff, parents and students) will flexibly use the loop most convenient to their destination.
  • A “connector road” connecting the North and South Loops, west of the football stadium.  This road is two-way and allows flexible access to the north and south side of the campus.
  • New drop-off zones on both the north and south loops.  The right lane is for drop-off only, the left lane is for through traffic.
  • A new lighted pedestrian crosswalk, with overhead signs is being installed on Huron Parkway, north of the entrance.  This will provide improved lighting for walkers and bikers, and provide lighted signage notifying drivers of pedestrians crossing in this area.
  • Elimination of pedestrian / vehicle conflicts under the arch.  The arch will be reserved for pedestrian use only, with a full pedestrian mall planned for Summer 2006 construction.  Watch for preliminary designs this fall. You will have an opportunity to provide comments and feedback on the preliminary design alternatives.
  • Installation of a new deceleration lane at the westbound Fuller Road traffic signal.
  • Expanded parking:  New visitor parking on the south loop, and additional student parking in the “lot by the rock”, and the “baseball lot”.
